Rebuild of an old friend

Postby Dave » Wed Jul 04, 2012 10:50 am

I wanted to share the rebuild of my 82 Toyota pu with everyone. Most have seen this truck or at least recognize the truck from pictures.

A couple years ago I decided to swap a new cab and bed onto my 1st Gen and clean it up a bit from when I/we the shop first built this truck. After 4+ years of beating on it the seams were starting to open up, doors didnt shut and the rockers were coming apart.

Now to start over.:smokin:

Knowing where all the brackets need to go made it real easy to weld everything on the frame while it was upside down.

Our front spring hanger at Dana width. Trail Gear cross member.

The rear springs were always inboard the same width as the front spring width but I thought I would try to keep it as low as possible. I decided to weld the rear spring hangers up in the frame.

I will be keeping the Dana 44 front and the Dana 60 rear. It had stock 1/2 ton Chevy rear springs and a 2'' block before. I will be replacing those with our lifted Chevy springs.

Dana 60 Pinion flange for the rear and Dana 44 to Toyota pinon flange for the front will be much better to build a drive shaft for than the Spicer yoke it use to have.

I cut out some frame braces and welded them in with the engine out and no braces, DONT do this, I ended up having a frame 3/4'' narrower than when I started
:mad3:

I ended up cutting the old eng stand plates off and welding some of my own in to make room for the engine.

Donor for the drive train is an 87 4 runner,

Previous power plant was a 94 pu 22re, I had put the engine, dash, harness and trans in as a whole. Because of the elect speedo the CEL was on all the time :( I am going a different route this time

I originally had a custom built RUF set of front springs made from Ford van rear's and other springs added to find the right ride and flex, I am using our
35" tire and up fronts springs with the last spring removed to see how it will do.

These springs are a bit shorter than what I was using so using the stock frame tubes ment bending some of our "No death wobble" shackles was in order.

The 87 4 runner was nice enough to donate its W56 trans. I already had a 4.7T case from the original truck so I added a dual case adapter and a rear disconnect. Of course a Triple shifter was needed. :shades:

oh, yea!. Like instead of the stock little rear spring perches I cut them off (knowing I would have to set pinion angle anyway) to install our 3 hole 7'' long perches.

Bolt it all up with our 5/8 u bolt flip kit. I use to have the old ford 9/16 u bolts and plates from a Bronco rear, hey at the time $40 at a wrecking yard for a flip kit was a good deal.

With a little grinding, and a couple holes drilled I got the 87 4 runner steering column to bolt right in. The steering wheel ends up being 1'' closer to the dash which is nice with a cramped 1st gen anyway.
